Rigid Boxes vs Corrugated Boxes: Which Should You Choose?
Brands often ask us whether they need a rigid box or a corrugated one. The honest answer is that they do different jobs. One is built to impress when it is opened. The other is built to travel. Some products need both.
This guide compares the two so you can choose with confidence, whether you are packing a gift set, an online order or a retail product.
How each one is built
Rigid boxes are made from thick, dense board called greyboard. The board is wrapped in printed paper, so the box keeps its shape and has a solid, premium feel. It does not fold flat like a carton. Our guide to how rigid boxes are made explains the process.
Corrugated boxes are made from layers of paper with a wavy middle layer, called a flute. That fluted layer gives the board some cushioning and rigidity at a low weight. Corrugated boxes are cut, folded and usually delivered flat. You can see the range under corrugated boxes.

When a rigid box is the better choice
Choose a rigid box when how the product looks and feels is part of the sale.
- Gift sets and premium products: luxury boxes and luxury gift boxes make an occasion of the opening.
- Launches and keepsakes: a rigid box is often kept and reused, which keeps your brand visible.
- A closure that feels good: see magnetic closure boxes and drawer boxes.
Our types of rigid boxes guide compares the styles in more detail.
When a corrugated box is the better choice
Choose corrugated when the journey matters more than the unboxing.
- Shipping and e-commerce: corrugated shipping boxes, corrugated mailer boxes and e-commerce packaging boxes are built for postal and courier routes.
- Heavier or bulkier items: look at double wall shipping boxes for more demanding loads. Always test a sample with your own product.
- Retail displays: corrugated retail display boxes hold stock on a shelf or counter.
- Space-saving storage: flat delivery suits sellers with limited room. See flat pack mailing boxes.
Using both together
Many brands use a rigid box inside a corrugated one. The rigid box is the product’s presentation, and the corrugated outer carton protects it in the post. This is common for premium gifts and subscription sets. If you are building a subscription, see subscription mailing boxes. For the outer carton, browse mailer boxes and shipping boxes.
A third option: folding cartons
If neither feels right, a folding carton sits between them. It is lighter than a rigid box and smoother to print than corrugated. Our comparison of rigid boxes vs folding cartons explains where it fits, and you can browse folding cartons.
A simple way to decide
- Will the box be opened as a moment? Choose rigid.
- Will it travel in the post? Choose corrugated, or put the rigid box inside one.
- Is storage space tight? Choose corrugated or a folding format.
- Is the product fragile or heavy? Ask us for advice and test a sample.
- Is the budget limited? Compare options. Our rigid box cost guide explains what drives price.

FAQs (4)
Is a rigid box stronger than a corrugated box?
They are strong in different ways. A rigid box keeps its shape and feels solid. A corrugated box is built for transport. We make no claim about load or postal performance, so test a sample with your own product.
Can I ship a rigid box on its own?
You can, but it is safer to place it inside a corrugated outer carton, because the printed paper can scuff in transit.
What is the minimum order?
Orders start from 100 units.
How long does delivery take?
Delivery is free across the UK and takes place within 21 days of artwork approval.
